Nepal Electric Vehicle (EV) Survey, 2020 ((http://tiny.cc/evnepal2020) is an ongoing survey for an academic research and journal publication that aims to provide information on different aspects of EV.

This article is the second article in our five part series where we discuss customer and potential customer perception towards EVs in Nepal; and the charging infrastructure for EVs in Nepal.

Survey Results II: What is the charging behavior of EV owners in Nepal?

This survey was intended for both 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler EV in Nepal. We released the survey on social media with the help of Google form. We have recorded responses from 40 EV owners so far.

Out of 40 respondents, 18 people own a two-wheeler and rest own a 4 wheeler. From the responses we collected, we could see that EV penetration has been spread in major cities throughout Nepal which was a very positive finding.

Among the people who had a two wheeler it was found that 44.5% of them charged their vehicle daily and rest 55.5% stated occasional charging over a week was enough for their usage.

Likewise, in case of 4 wheeler majority of people(90.9%) charge sometimes in a week while only a small number (9.1%) charge their vehicle everyday.

Where do Nepalese owners charge their EVs?

The respondents were asked for their places of charging their vehicles. We provided options as home, office and other for answers. It was observed that maximum number of owners i.e.15 preferred charging at home, while only one respondent depended fully at office location to charge.

9 people charged at home and office both, while 1 person charged at home and other places. It was seen that other14 respondents opted all three places for EV charging . Number of owners charging at places other than home and office, and at office and other places both was null.

The survey data shows that presently, the EV load at residential area is greater than other locations. The culture of plugging in office is also growing and we can expect this to rise in future. At the moment, no person fully relies on charging stations or other charging places. As this survey was mostly targeted for the private vehicles, we must have obtained such result.

A more in depth analysis on EV charging and charging load shall be published in final academic paper.

The next part of the series with some interesting insight to another aspects will be published soon. Please fill and the survey to help us get better output on EVs in Nepal.
