The Electricity Map got more attention than we initially expected. Showing live CO2 emissions of the electricity consumed, it is now used in class rooms, lectures and in many debates online. It is pushing Holland to open up its data, was mentioned by more than 5o news articles, and got attention from e.g. WWF, UNFCCC and Greenpeace.

Over time, we’ve had more that 20 contributors, which all started when a student first added his country (Poland) to the map at a time when only France, Denmark and Germany were mapped.

I’m happy to discover that people are as fascinated as me about this topic.

Mapping the world

This map had always been Europe-centric, and because we still believe information precedes action, we knew we couldn’t stop there.

With help from the community, we started adding countries outside of Europe, starting with the United States, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Check it out here (or download the app on iOS or Android):

Also, this project is Open Source. Everyone is encouraged to add a new country on the map if an appropriate data source is found. Let’s map the world!
