In Psalm 127:2, Scripture says that God gives his beloved sleep. In other words, if you are endeared to God, He sponsors your sleep.

Adam had to sleep for Eve to be formed. Joseph, Mary’s husband, had to sleep to dream — to get instructions from an angel concerning Mary his wife and baby Jesus.

And Jesus. Jesus was enjoying a sleep time in a boat, woke up (refreshed), and silenced a raging wind. Amazing, isn’t it?

Apostle James reminds us that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17)

The truth is, sleep is a gift “from above.” And there are lots of mental and physical benefits of this gift.

God wants you to get enough sleep since he desires that you live good enough to serve him well enough.

Among many benefits, good sleep is the most natural reset button for your mind and body; there are no substitutes for it. Your mental and physical health depends much on how well you sleep.

Yes, you shouldn’t oversleep, but don’t be under-sleeping also. Even when it’s needful that you beat a deadline, or when you should work hard to achieve a particular result, or when you get engrossed in a movie that you can’t take your eyes off, know when to listen to your body, take a time out and sleep. Rest your eyes, please.

And as a way to stop fighting sleep, refuse to follow any idea of hard work that encourages people to sleep little. Refuse! Such encouragements are ungodly. Spending your health wrongly for the sake of hard work is stupid. Work hard, Yes. Don’t oversleep, Yes. But sleep little, No!
