After quite some preparations, finally the day of our first hosted event arrived at Elements’ Barcelona office. Scheduled in the week of the MWC2015, we were expecting over 60 people from the great Barcelona Android User Group (BAUG). It turned out not everybody could make it (we were a little worried about the number of seats we had available), so the crowd could sit comfortably.

At 19:30 the event started and together with BAUG organizer Alexandre Sutra we did a short introduction of the meetup topics of the evening, and introduced Elements Interactive to the attendants. Today’s presentations were: Animated Tutorials, presented by our very own colleague Edward Huerta from the Dutch Elements office and a presentation of the Couchbase system, done by James Nocentini, who came in from London.

In the first presentation Edward explained a beautiful and interesting technique to make visual tutorials in Android apps more interactive and clear. He used some great examples and explained the source code that makes it work. Edward published the code on his Github account.

After that we had a short break to give James some time to prepare and also to quench our thirst with some beers we provided.

James was ready and the second talk started. The Couchbase presentation was very clear and interesting and gave the developers a lot of details and useful examples about how their system works. We will all think twice before selecting a tool to sync and store data in our apps. Some enlightening remarks were made by the audience and James made very clear what their tool can do and what its usage is.

When the tech part was almost over, the food arrived at nine o’clock sharp, so James’ Q&A session was interrupted by two huge piles of pizzas! The questions were done after a short time (food usually distracts developers), and so the mingling began…

I personally met a lot of nice people and made interesting contacts, the pizzas were nice and the beer was cold, so I would call that a success! We were very happy with the experience and we are all looking forward hosting new events in the near future! Probably iOS is next, but who knows!

We will keep you posted on the Elements blog of course!
