On being human

I live in that messy place

Where futures and pasts collide

Seen and unseen

Created and destroyed

Before me swirling future vistas

Some probable, some possible

Some preferable, some not

Some near, some far

At once exciting and terrible

And in the shadows, death

Behind me shifting memory-scapes

Some bright, some dark

Some sweet, some bitter

Some near, some far

At once pleasurable and painful

And in the shadows, me

When the past becomes frozen

So future possibilities die

And the present narrows

For the present is framed by our futures

And not our pasts

From my vantage point I choose

Sometimes consciously, mostly not

How my present creeps forward
