I’ll be honest with you. I enjoy the holidays for the most part, but there’s little to nothing I like about preparing for them. There’s just so much shopping and planning to be done, all at a time when a lot of my clients are hustling to push assignments through before the end of the year.

But then the holidays actually get here. I fall in love with feeling like I finally have permission to relax, put life on hold for a while, and help myself to all the wonderful Christmas treats that are always around. I get used to the way the world looks with Christmas lights on everything and the way things feel with the smell of holiday spices in the air. I get used to feeling rested.

Then it’s all over as quickly as it started, and it’s time for me to (somehow) start caring about bills, deadlines, and calories again. That’s where I’m at right now — the first couple of days back after New Year’s — and it’s honestly pretty depressing so far. But I’m hanging in there, just like I do every year. Here are some suggestions for doing the same if you’re struggling, too.

Admit the Struggle Is Real
