“but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)

Have you ever been thirsty for something, but what you consumed didn’t quench your thirst? In fact, it made it worse?

What you choose to quench your thirst with matters. The ocean might look like it could quench your thirst, but since it’s full of salt you would actually dehydrate yourself by drinking it.

If we’re not selective with what we choose to satisfy our thirsts with, we’ll do the same thing to our hearts without even knowing it.

When we’re thirsty for affection, we’ll look for satisfaction in the first person that shows us attention. When we’re thirsty for affirmation, we’ll look for satisfaction in the opinions of others. When we’re thirsty for fulfillment, we’ll look for satisfaction in a certain status.

It’s only when we look inside that we realize the things we’ve been running to for refreshment have been dehydrating our souls.

Jesus is the only one that can provide true satisfaction. He’s the only one who’s consistent enough to refresh us without sucking us dry in the process.

This doesn’t mean that you’ll never feel thirsty again. It means that when you do thirst, Christ can be your never-ending source.
