Safety first. What are truly contactless payments?
The question of contact in payment transactions has become a central topic recently. As a security measure, any kind of contact between the buyer and the salesperson and/or between the devices that they use should be minimized. Ideally, it should be avoided altogether.
Frequent methods of payment like cash or credit cards require contact. In case of ‘classic’ cards, the PIN number needs to be typed into devices that pass through many hands. Contactless credit cards have brought an end to insertion into terminals or swiping, but there is still contact required with the merchant’s device if one enters the PIN for larger purchases. Not really contactless, is it?
Truly contactless payments are made by hovering your contactless device — usually a card or a smartphone — over a reader, which then accepts the payment without contact. This not only means no contact between the two devices, but also between the two participants in the exchange, i.e. between the merchant and the buyer, who can keep the required safety distance.
