One Sunday morning in the summer of 2019, I wore a pair of khaki pants with a white button-up, and grabbed my Bible to head to church. Before exiting the house, my little sister stopped me. Curiosity and humor was on her face, “WAIT!! Are you wearing your high school uniform to go to Church?” I wasn’t because, after all, I was only wearing a white dress-shirt and khakis— every guy has that outfit. It’s the go-to business casual look!
I’ve worn uniform to school during my entire academic life, with the exception of university. In Haiti, uniform is required at every academic space and on every academic level. So, in kindergarten, every day I wore my striped, navy blue and brown, collared shirt with red shorts. In elementary school, I traded the red shorts for navy blue pants, and wore a brown button-up instead.
In 7th and 8th grade, which is shortly after I moved to America, I was stuck with a royal blue dress-shirt made with an uncomfortably thick material — plus a tie, khaki pants, and black or brown dress shoes. In high school, that style of pants remained but I traded the navy blue for a white button-down accompanied by a special purple tie that one could only purchase from the school’s main office.
