Michael knew he would have to kill Paul. The two of them had known each other for ten years. But he couldn’t let sentiment get in the way. And even though he liked Paul, there was nothing he could do to change what was going to happen.

They both worked for SWAN Corp. A tech company that specialised in surveillance. Spying, hacking, listening. If a client wanted someone watched, Swan could do it without anyone leaving the office.

Gone were the days of sending out a team of spies. These days everyone carried a phone. Even to the bathroom. And even if the device was switched off, Swan could turn it back on. This was their speciality!

Cold-Starting was the term the company used. Like a car on a cold morning. If the power was OFF, SWAN could switch it back ON. It meant the only means of escaping their gaze was living in a tent on the side of a mountain with no communication device whatsoever.

But who does that?

Not the people SWAN’s clients wanted watching. The people they watched were people of influence. But not celebrities or politicians. They were just carrion for the tabloids. SWAN watched tech start-ups. What was the next big thing? Where were things leading?
