An old but familiar acquaintance was scheduled for a chat. While waiting, I was reading about the latest Apple store that opened in Kuala Lumpur at The Exchange TRX, acclaimed as the first and largest of its kind in Southeast Asia. There were viral videos on TikTok about the incredibly long line and how people were adamant about staying in line in order to check out the highly anticipated outlet. According to reports, thousands turned up, but the first person in line was a man from China who started queuing at 11 pm on Friday. The outlet opened on Saturday at 10 am. “I am an avid Apple fan, so I decided to come straight from the airport,” he said.

Lucky early birds received a one-of-a-kind tote bag from Apple, and many immediately sold them online for up to $2000. Madness? You bet, like a witch on fire.

When the time came, the acquaintance relayed that he had been asked recently to leave the prestigious chemical company he worked for. The reason given was “poor performance.” After 15 years of service to the company, a two-week notice was given, and that was that.
