Working with Medium’s best writer
I’ve always found gifted writers peculiar. They’re not the kind you can spot in a crowd — no particular swagger or airs about them. But spend time with one, really observe them, and you’ll notice the oddities.
A year into my writing journey, fate — kind and surprising — brought me face-to-face with my Medium idol, Michael Thompson, via a video call. What began as a fleeting encounter has since blossomed into a friendship that has profoundly shaped my life and my view of writing, artistry, and the craft itself. For nearly a year before that moment, I had devoured Michael’s work with the fervor of a starved reader, marveling at the singularity of his voice and the unmistakable quality of his prose. Yet, it was only when I spoke with him, when I glimpsed the curious workings of his mind, that I truly understood. His writing wasn’t merely skillful — it was inevitable. Work that peculiar, that brilliant, could only be born of a mind as wonderfully unconventional as his.
