“You need to start dating again. Go out there, allow people into your life.”

I looked at the person giving me the advice. It was my 24-year-old Tinder-loving team member from Vietnam. Acting on management’s behalf, when I issued the space for a 360 degree feedback loop from every member on the team, regardless of rank, this was not part of the discourse I had in mind.

“You are aware that I am old enough to be your mother,” I looked up from my laptop and gave her a blank stare but cracked a warm smile.

“I read on TikTok that among the signs of loneliness is overworking, busyness, and harsh self-criticism.” My team member was as serious as a boa constrictor midway swallowing an antelope.

“Is that where folks turn to for life advice these days, TikTok? What a waste, all those years I spent at university.”

“And while you’re at it, try not to be so sarcastic. They might not get it.”

“But sarcasm is my love language.” This time, I was the one being serious.

“Try and be more affectionate. Smile and laugh a bit more.”
