THE EMANCIPATION OF LYRA — A STAR WHO IS FALLING TO THE BEAT OF HER HEART (2019)
Lyra is a musical name in itself to begin with. Moreover, it is literally written in the stars (a summer constellation with the same name contains the fourth brightest star in the whole night sky). Is this a recipe for success? Of course not. Yet, Lyra doesn’t seem to need stellar providence. Even though she has not released a lot of material yet, it is already evident how artistically strong she is while marching to her own drum.
For fans of Kate Bush and Florence and the Machine — what characterizes and distinguishes Lyra’s music is the same roaring confidence in her otherworldliness. Irish roots and background have shaped her voice and vibe to truly reflect the glory of a Celtic cathedral — dramatic, turgid and solid. A little bit eerie, a little bit mysterious, Wuthering Heights type of girl — we can’t help but love it.
“Falling”, Lyra’s new single that already made it to Spotify New Music Friday playlist, remains in this exact atmosphere. The song is thundering and powerful, yet simultaneously serious and delicate when it comes to its topic. Yes, there have been millions of songs written about heartbreak and disappointment but it only proves how strong and nagging these emotions are that we still have something new to say in the matter. “Falling” is about an overwhelming feeling of betrayal, something that sits on your shoulders like a demon and pushes you to fall. We all have different coping mechanisms, Lyra created a brilliant song to free herself and subsequently help us in our own fights for emancipation.
On this note, it is worth highlighting that Lyra writes her own lyrics, running to the beat of her heart, because she does not feel comfortable singing somebody else’s material. Needless to say, it makes her art all the more honest and genuine, something that earns my respect every time. She also promised to release another single this year and on April 16th you’ll have a chance to see her live in London, tickets on sale now (head HERE to grab yours).
Lyra shines brightly on the musical firmament. The fact that she is a newcomer and we do not yet know her whole artistic story only ads a veil of mystery (figuratively and literally — see the “Falling” video) to the already intriguing art. We hope to learn more about Lyra soon and we are hungry for more songs, hopefully taking shape in her musical cathedral as we speak.
