I never get asked this question

I graduated back in July. The 19th of July, to be exact. In the whole 132 days since my graduation, I’ve had this conversation countless (read: too many) times:

So, what do you do?

I’m a communications and content intern at NCC Group.

An intern? How old are you? (people always think I’m older than 22)

22. I only graduated in July so…

Oh. What degree did you do?

Film and Media Studies at Manchester Met

Ah, that’s interesting!

Then the conversation moves back to my job or they ask more questions my skills and interests. A handful have asked me to explain a bit more about what, exactly, Film and Media Studies involved.

But no one — outside of a few naturally interested family members — has asked me this question:

Oh, what grade did you get?

Not one person has asked me what final grade I have to show for three years of hard work. Nobody cares.

Why? Because most people are interested in these three areas:

  • What you know
  • What you enjoy
  • What you can do

Anything else — including a nice bit of paper saying you got a certain grade on a certain course at a certain university — doesn’t matter. So, give yourself something else to talk about. Forget about relying on your degree for years to come. Forget about relying on it straight after university.

Get out there, live for experiences, talk to people, listen, and learn.

Experience over education. Always.
