Dragons are often portrayed in stories as dangerous beats who bring harm to the people and land they encounter. Dragons are found in classic and contemporary fairy tales, as well as non fairy tale stories. In the Fairytale “The Dragon of the North”, by Andrew Lang, a dangerous dragon destroys whole tracts of land in the North, along with the people who lived there. No man could kill the creature without a special ring. With the help of magic powers from the ring, a youthful man was able to beat the dragon and save the North.

The dragon found in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is a beast version of the villain Maleficent. Maleficent, an evil fairy, transforms into a dragon to try and keep the prince from waking Sleeping Beauty. Through breathing fire, the dragon sets the land to flame and attempts to kill the prince. However, she fails and ends up dying in the process.

Dragons are also apparent in the TV show series, Game of Thrones. Three dragons are born under the protection of Daenerys Targaryen. Named the mother of dragons, Daenerys raises the dragons as weapons against her enemies. “When my dragons are grown, we will take back what was stolen from me and destroy those who wronged me! We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground!” — Daenerys. Daenerys’s dragons are responsible for killing thousands of lives.
