While it may not have a startup scene as large as Silicon Valley’s, the amount of startups in Berlin is steadily growing. With some members of the German government pushing for tax breaks for small businesses and as the German economy continues to be strong, that rate is only going to increase even more.

But which companies have already made it? Which startups are doing something promising or have bootstrapped themselves to fame and fortune? In our list of the most promising Berlin startups, we take a look at some of the strong startups in the German capital.

1. Delivery Hero

Delivery Hero

Catering to the hungry, Delivery Hero is an online food-ordering service that allows people to find restaurants in their area based on the type of food they’d like to eat. Delivery Hero has over 75,000 global restaurant partners and is available in in 29 countries including Australia, South Korea, China, Denmark and Mexico.

According to TNW Tech5 2014, Delivery Hero is one of Germany’s top 3 fastest growing startups.

2. EyeEm

EyeEm

If Instagram is made for those who want to make their selfies look a little better before they upload them, then EyeEm is similar, but for professionals. EyeEm co-founder Florian Meissner thought of the idea for the EyeEm mobile app when he lost his digital camera only to discover that there is a passionate community of people online, using their smartphones to take photos instead.

EyeEm offers a comprehensive editing suite, a community for people to share their photos and there is also a marketplace where people can sell their photgraphy too.

3. Ondango

Ondango

There are so many opportunities to sell on Facebook but not everybody knows where to start or how to do it effectively. This Berlin startup helps sellers tap into Facebook’s humongous 1 billion+ audience.

Ondango allows sellers to sell their goods on a blog, a Facebook page or a website and manage it in one central place and they can also integrate their storefront with Google Analytics so that they can find out more about the audience that they are selling to.

4. WorkHub

WorkHub

WorkHub helps its users get employment. WorkHub classes its users as freelancers and lets them do a range of tasks which are listed on the site by approved businesses and organisations.

For each task completed by a user, WorkHub’s backend uses an algorithm to approve or reject the task (revisions may be requested by the client) and if all is okay, the user will be rewarded with credits. 100 credits are worth 1 Euro.

Although it’s more unorthodox than services like Elance or oDesk, WorkHub’s selling point is that users can work any time, anywhere using just a smartphone or laptop with Internet access.

5. bonusbox

bonusbox

bonusbox is one of the best know Berlin startups on this list as it is the world’s largest online loyalty program. It has over 4 million users and over 3,000 retail partners.

Completely free for its users, bonusbox rewards them with points each time they shop online at one of their retail partners. These points can then be converted into vouchers for a store of their choice such as Walmart, CVS, Target or Gap.

6. GameDuell

GameDuell

With over 125 million registered users, cross-platform games community GameDuell has done very well for itself.

GameDuell makes its money from its portfolio of over 70 games, which it hosts on its own website, on iOS and Android and on Facebook too. Some of these games include Bubble Speed, Jungle Jewels and card game classics like Hearts and Solitaire.

7. sidestage

sidestage

When you’re hosting an event and you need to book a last minute performer to do the entertainment, what do you do? Do you call all of your friends and find out which one of them can play guitar? Do you perform yourself? Or do you cross your fingers that your guests don’t mind being bored?

With Berlin startup sidestage you don’t have to do any of that; instead you can just enter your event’s location and it takes you to a list of all of the bands in your area, along with their genre and their fee. From there you can quickly book them or find out more about their music.

8. KptnCook

KptnCook

While services like Delivery Hero solve the age old question of ‘what are we going to eat tonight?’, KptnCook tells you what to eat and how to make it.

Every day, KptnCook provides three new meal suggestions, ensuring that the users of its app always have something to eat. Those suggestions only last for 24 hours too, so KptnCook’s users have an incentive to keep returning.

9. PlugSurfing

PlugSurfing

The biggest problem that electric car drivers face is that their batteries run out of power. If it runs out while they are driving, they’ll be stranded and may have to hitch a ride home but PlugSurfing was created so that electric car drivers never have to worry about that again.

The PlugSurfing map is a network of charging points across Germany and the Netherlands. There are over 15,000 charging points plotted on its map and it can even tell you if those points are occupied, who runs the charging point and if you can pay for it via the PlugSurfing app or via a keyhanger.

10. Rivalfox

Rivalfox

Rivalfox is one company that can help other Berlin startups dominate their market. It offers real-time information about a business’ competitors, allowing them to quickly take action and stop their rivals from taking any of their market share.

Some examples of the info it provides include whether or not your rival uses A/B testing, if they are improving their social media strategy and if they are generating more traffic with content marketing.
