Futures Markets in Finance
In financial futures, unlike commodity futures, the settlement differs. Individual investors generally do not exchange physical goods and cash on the expiration date. Instead, they settle contracts in cash or roll over the contract at a cost. While physical delivery is possible, most individual traders use futures as an investment tool rather than to acquire physical goods. Therefore, on the expiration date, they either settle in cash (paying or receiving the difference) or continue their futures contracts through rollover.
Perpetual CEX
Introduced by the cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX in 2016, perpetual futures trading in crypto offers two main differences from traditional financial futures markets. First, these contracts have no expiration date. Instead, there’s a concept of a “liquidation price,” at which the collateralized cryptocurrency may be forcibly liquidated. Thus, settlement occurs either through this forced liquidation or by traders closing their positions before reaching the liquidation price. Second, unlike traditional futures that settle in physical goods or cash, settlement occurs using cryptocurrency as collateral (or margin). This market has eliminated the rollover costs associated with traditional financial futures, allowing 24/7 trading due to the nature of cryptocurrencies.
Perpetual CEX, beginning with BitMEX and followed by others like Binance and OKX, has drawn numerous users and capital, dealing not only with major cryptocurrencies like BTC, ETH, and SOL but also meme coins like DOGE and PEPE.
Perpetual DEX
With the evolution of the DeFi ecosystem, “broker-free” Perpetual DEXs have emerged. Prominent examples include dydx and GMX. As of May 16, 2024, dydx has a daily trading volume of $1.28B, while GMX, launched in September 2021, has achieved a cumulative trading volume of $202B to date.
Numerous Perp DEXs are continuing to emerge, especially around Ethereum Layer2 networks. For instance, Arbitrum hosts around 40 Perp DEXs, while Optimism and Base have about 10 each.

예를 들어, 분기마다 옥수수를 거래하는 공급자와 구매자가 있다고 해봅시다. 이번 분기에는 가격이 $100K이었는데, 다음 분기에 옥수수 농사가 잘 안 돼서 가격이 $200K로 오르면 구매자 입장에서 큰 타격을 받을 수 있습니다. 반대로 가격이 $50K로 떨어질 경우, 공급자가 경제적 부담을 가질 수 있습니다.

Perpetual CEX
2016년 BitMEX라는 암호화폐 거래소에서 처음으로 암호화폐 무기한 선물거래소가 등장했습니다. 이 거래소는 기존 금융 선물시장과 크게 두 가지 차이점이 존재합니다. 첫 번째는 기존 선물 계약과 달리 ‘만기일’이 없습니다. 대신 ‘청산 가격’이라는 개념이 있으며, 이 가격에 도달하면 담보로 잡힌 암호화폐가 강제 청산될 수 있습니다. 그래서 ‘결제’가 되는 시점은 이처럼 ‘강제 청산’이 되거나 혹은 청산 가격에 도달하기 전에 선물 계약을 스스로 ‘종료’하는 방법이 있습니다. 두 번째 차이점은 기존 선물계약과 달리 실물인수도나 현금결제 방식이 아니라 담보물(또는 마진)로 쓰이는 암호화폐로 결제가 이루어진다는 점입니다. 이러한 시장은 기존 금융 선물 시장의 롤오버(재계약) 비용을 제거했으며, 암호화페의 특성상 선물시장에서도 24시간 거래가 가능해졌습니다.
