A World Between Mythologies

I didn’t quite understand this quote when I first read it in Anne Bogart’s book, A Director Prepares; 7 Essays on Art and Theatre. Before we talk any further on what it means, or why it’s important, let’s first define the term myth.

Myths, in our times, have been taught to us as stories that don’t relate to us. Stories about the ancient gods.

But myth is way more important than that.

Myth is integral to our everyday life and how we relate to the world. Myth is how entire civilizations structure themselves. As the good Dr. John Vervaeke says in his lecture series Awakening from the Meaning Crisis,

“Myths are symbolic stories about perennial patterns…Myths take these patterns and make them shareable with ourselves and each other.”

I cannot express the importance of myth in our lives. Everything you do is based on myth. The most basic functions of our everyday lives are based on myth. Eating food. Going to work. Writing on Medium. A myth is like a fundamental story that we hold evident as an integral truth in order to function within a society. This is why we are so lost as a society. We are rapidly moving through mythologies at an astounding rate.
