The State, The Citizen and Authenticity

In the process of becoming, Virtue is a necessity. Virtue, in the traditional sense, means excellence, and refers to the Cardinal Virtues of Wisdom, Justice, Temperance and Courage.

The process of becoming is mandated to us by Nature. There is a belief that we are each born with unique traits: talents, desires, skills, character and disposition. This unique combination showcases in us our Nature, and it is within our Nature to desire and do what preserves ourself.

But becoming what is mandated to us by Nature is no easy task. All throughout the world and it’s various epochs and different societies, individuals are kept subordinate to the aims of the state, culture, dominant mythologies, religions, social roles and responsibilities. These subordinations can be antithetical to fulfilling the mandate by Nature, yet they also provide a framework from which the individual may fulfill their nature.

This article does not intend to make the case for an ideal state, but has certain pre-suppositions that will indeed arise for it to be coherent. So let us state what the ideal relationship between a state (or entity) and the individuals within it should be.
