Why We Gather. There are plenty of myths and facts on the topic of transracial adoption, including who transracial adoptees are, pathways into transracial adoption, and the practices and policies that shape it today.
Join us for a look at a few of the common experiences of race and racism faced by transracial adoptive families and people who are transracially adopted, and at issues unique to sub-groups within the community. We’ll consider transracial adoption as a unique context in which children learn about race, ethnicity and culture, and what this might mean for parental socialization within and beyond families. And, as always, we’ll devote plenty of time to your questions and comments!
REGISTER to join. Come to share, come to learn, come to be in community with others looking for a just way forward for ourselves and for the next generation.

Gina Miranda Samuels, PhD, MSW is an Associate Professor at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, and Faculty Affiliate at the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture. Her teaching and training focuses on issues related to social work practice with individuals and families, multiraciality and adoption, and applied qualitative research.
Her scholarship explores identity, belonging, loss, and chronic displacements from home among those who have experienced foster care, homelessness, and/or transracial adoption. Her recent book with Dr. Kelly Jackson, Multiracial Cultural Attunement, explores how social workers and others can engage the dynamics of race and culture in ways that are critical, complex, and socially just.If it’s the 4th Tuesday of the month, it’s usually time for Talking Race & Kids — please note that the conversation is happening a week early this month, on November 19th.
Check out last month’s not-to-be-missed conversation, “Fairies are for white girls” and other lies my sister told me. Our guests, children’s book authors Marti Dumas and Zetta Elliott, joined us for a conversation about how inclusive fantasy fiction empowers ALL children. What’s more:
- Marti and her son shared their favorite middle grade fantasy fiction titles.
- Zetta shared these sources for inclusive fantasy fiction for kids of all ages.
See you Tuesday! Don’t forget to register!
Soon,
Andrew and Melissa
