We have noticed a lack of publications with in depth analyses on societal issues backed by data. On the one hand, there are multiple publications for sharing code and theory related to data. On the other, multiple news outlets feature less data intensive pieces and are more focused on the punchline.

A good example of this is the Texas power storms that were in the news at the beginning of 2021. These were caused mainly from natural gas outages, but there are practically no articles that explicitly follow the chain of consequences leading to these power outages and how power outages in turn were connected to water outages later in the week. We wrote an article on using data to understand what really happened during the Texas power-water coupled outages.

One of the current major themes of this publication is cybersecurity — and particularly the impacts of cybersecurity incidents on society. The Colonial Pipeline incident is an example of such an incident wherein ransomware attacks on Colonial Pipeline computer networks caused gas shortages that were felt for a few weeks. Again there is the same missing gap that we wish to address. Cybersecurity professionals often are solely focused on how hackers got entry to the systems, which is extremely technical and puts off many readers. And news outlets are focused on the punchline e.g. “The Colonial Pipeline Attack Is A Major National Security Incident” without necessarily diving into how the incident occurred and what measures could be undertaken to build resilience at every step of the disruption. This publication breaks down these incidents and more, to offer holistic data based perspectives on modern societal issues.

We will accept articles that delve into societal issues through data and story telling that meet our standards for significance and innovation. The topics are not limiting, and feel free to submit your best work. As you will see, we have published multiple articles on other diverse topics including book reviews, science, and more. We offer you the chance to shape this publication for a large unmet need in data based storytelling, and the chance to grow as a writer, taking various perspectives into account.

There’s 4 sections to fill, and it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes in total (see the snapshot below)
