Abdul Kudus, Ghana Fellow serving in the Ministry of Finance, receives prestigious Surveyor Prof. John Tiah Bugri Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Development Studies.

After graduating from the University for Development Studies, Abdul Kudus set out to complete his year of National Service as most recent graduates do in Ghana. He heard about Emerging Public Leaders Ghana and was selected to join its fourth cohort — allowing him to complete his year of service through our Public Service Fellowship program.

Abdul currently serves at the Ministry of Finance, where he works to support routine pre-audit data analysis and ongoing review of annual statements. His excellent performance while at the University for Development Studies, however, caught the attention of the Ghana Institute of Surveyors. Kudus graduated as the Overall Best Student in the Department of Real Estate and land management, Overall Best Student of the faculty of planning and land management, as well as the recipient of the Dean’s Award for best graduating male student of the faculty of planning and land management in 2021.

In February 2022, he was awarded with the prestigious Surveyor Prof. John Tiah Bugri Award for Academic Excellence — an award given to the best graduating student in the department of real estate and land management. Abdul was invited to attend the 53rd annual celebration of the Ghana Institute of Surveyors where he was recognized and received his award.

“Receiving the award was an honor. I see myself making positive changes in society and Emerging Public Leaders was the best platform to do this. I chose the path of public service to make an impact because I believe the public service creates an enabling environment for institutions across all sectors. It’s the best place for me,” says Abdul.

Serving as an Emerging Public Leaders Fellow has played an instrumental role in his journey — providing resources like laptops and monthly training to aid his work. Abdul shared that he is now able to do complex analysis using Microsoft Excel and efficiently uses Microsoft Word for assignments.

Emotional intelligence training from the Public Service Fellowship Program has enabled him to have good working relationships with coworkers and colleagues — thus helping him manage expectations efficiently. Adbul describes working in the civil service as a relevant institution that gives direction to institutions, affecting and impacting the lives of all persons living in the country.

Abdul is inspired by his supervisor at the office, Jacob Ahadzi who is the chief internal auditor at the Ministry of Finance. He admires his principled nature and his ability to provide a learning and thriving work environment. Emerging Public Leaders Ghana Country Director Moses Cofie also inspires him because of his ability to be a source of emotional support and hope to young people.

In the near future, Abdul envisions making an impact in the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources as a Lands Director to solve the many challenges in this sector.
