Discord for newbies!
If you ask Wikipedia, “Discord is a proprietary freeware voice-over-Internet Protocol application designed for video gaming communities, that specializes in text, image, video and audio communication between users in a chat channel.”
In simple words, Discord is a communication app, much like Telegram or WhatsApp. It’s a place where communities can get together and interact with each other. The Discord app works with desktop and mobile platforms, combining the features of a chat lobby, a message board, and voice chats into one app.
We at the Emissary Guild have decided Discord would be the perfect home for our community. Why not Telegram, you ask? After all, cryptocurrencies communities have taken over Telegram and everyone already knows how it works. Well, simply because Discord has some features and options that are not available in other apps.
How to get started with Discord?
First, obviously, you need to create a Discord user for yourself.
- Visit the Discord website
- Click on “Download” or “Open Discord in your browser”
- Enter a username.
- If Discord is offering you to create a server, click “skip”
- Enter your email address
- Enter a password
- Tap “claim account”
And ta-da! You now have your own user on Discord.
Desktop, Browser or Mobile?
Once you’ve created a Discord account, you can choose to run it in your browser or install the Discord app. The app gives you many more customization options and we think it’s more comfortable, but that’s totally up to you. Oh, and by the way — of course there’s a mobile app. Discord is also available for Android and iOS devices so you can always stay in touch when on the go!
What’s next? Join a server!
Once you’re set up, you can start by either creating a new Discord server yourself and sending out invitation codes right away, or by using an invitation code to join a pre-existing server, as the Emissary Guild server!
To join the Emissary Guild, simply click here!
WOW! I’m in… but… what’s going on here?
No worries. We know it might seem a bit intimidating at first, but once you get it — it’s super comfortable.
This is the main screen:
On the left side, you can see the list of all the servers you joined. For example, in this image, there’s only server — the Emissary Guild community.
To open a server, you need to click on its icon. This is what you see after clicking on the Emissary Guild community server.

Right side: a list of all the members in the server
Center: texting area
Left side: a list of categories and channels.
Each channel is like a small group, dedicated to a specific subject. The channels can be divided into categories to make it easier for us to find them and navigate in the server.
What are Discord roles?
One of the many cool features of Discord is the ability to create special roles for users. A role can grant its holder a new color, a special title and sometimes, unique permissions, depending on the admin’s preferences.
For example, in the Emissary Guild community, you will be able to find the following roles:

Cool and useful Hacks
· User profile: can be found at the bottom left side of the screen.
· Tag people: simply by using @ and the username.
· Tag roles: you can tag everyone with a special role just by using @ and the name of the role. In the same way, you can tag @everyone in the server. Note — avoid that… it’s annoying (=
· Tag channels: if you want to mention a specific channel and make your message clickable, just add # before the channel name (for example, #welcome).
What are Discord bots?
Much like on Telegram, Discord allows bots as well. We use some of them to monitor the activity in the group or to take special actions. Nothing much you need to know here, we just thought you should know the bots exist.
