Israel’s Strong Science and Technology Sectors

Israel has a strong and dominant technology. Many factors contribute to its strength, including its innovative and growing science and technology sectors. Israel invests close to 4.3% of its gross domestic product (GDP) in technology R&D, far higher than the rest of the world. Israel has a keen understanding of its people, economy, politics, and foreign relations therefore making this investment is definitely beneficial for the Israeli people, says Emmanuil Grinshpun.

A significant number of Israelis work in science and technology. This is evidenced by 140 scientists and technologists per 10,000 employees. By way of comparison, the United States employs 85 per 10,000, and Japan 83. The fact that Israel has a highly educated and technically advanced population also helps the sector.

The Israel government plays a strong role in these sectors as well. Their support advances civil and educational efforts in making the sectors one of the strongest in the world. Their support is seen in grants, resources, and cross-border joint ventures to access leading edge technologies. In fact, many Israeli universities receive government funding for advancing science and technology. Students are often put in multi-disciplinary cross functional teams to deliver solutions to various problems. It is not uncommon to see a team comprising a medical student, member of the military, economist, and software engineer — to solve theoretical problems having real life impact, say Emmanuil Grinshpun.

Israel’s pharmaceutical industry has also benefitted from having such a skilled workforce. Many foreign corporations base their R&D centers throughout Israel. Numerous patents are being filed around the world having Israeli scientists as inventors. Being in the forefront of key pharma development, is beneficial for the Israeli people and the entire region, says Emmanuil Grinshpun.

Science and technology is definitely seen all throughout Israel, but Tel Aviv stands out as the key hub. Home to many technology companies, and science-centric Universities — Tel Aviv is also home to key technology incubators and corridors. Newsweek magazine named Tel Aviv one of the most technologically influential cities in the world in 1998. This distinction is just as relevant today as then. Similar sentiments were shared by Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt, who stated that Israel has the most important high-tech center in the World after the United States.

The fact that Israel has strong ties with nations around the world assists in Israel companies and universities to jointly collaborate with foreign counterparts for increased R&D. Israeli innovation and technology is a cornerstone of their economy and one can see Israel tech in practice around the world.
