The Black community has an issue.

Well, to be frank, it has many issues, but this one, in particular, has been a thorn in my behind for quite some time.

Unlike most communities, it seems that the collective tends to down those with degrees. And (as per usual) Black women, specifically, are often the ones who are on the receiving end of the backlash.

To be fair, this isn't totally new rhetoric. I have seen successful men across the board disregard the importance of women's education.

And, indeed, these days, there is less emphasis on the importance of education in general.

Nevertheless, there is a huge difference between not caring and going above and beyond to undermine women who went leaps and bounds to obtain secondary education.

And if we're honest, those smarter of us who grew up in city schools were often shamed for being smart, speaking proper English, and taking our education seriously from grade school on.

Personally speaking, I was certainly not exempt from this. I grew up being told I "talked White," "think I know it all," "use big words to sound smart," etc.
