The Chihuahua in Us
Many of us have a love/hate relationship with chihuahuas; they are cute, adorable and incredibly annoying when they bark. As long as they are on a leash and near their human, they’ll appear as a ferocious animal that is not afraid of bigger dogs or strangers. Yet, if you get too close to them and pretend you’re about to attack them, they’ll run away squealing with their tail between their legs.
That’s some of us behind a screen.
Somehow, as long as we’re hiding (on a leash), we think we have permission to bark at people that don’t believe as we do. It’s as if our cellphones suddenly grew horns. Instead of having an open-minded conversation that requires effort to process new information, we hold a stick and verbally hit the opponent.
Even God said, “Come, let us reason together” (Isaiah) to mere humans. Why can’t we be civil among ourselves? Responding with love and respect (Peter) to someone who disagrees with our core beliefs should be our default mode.
Don’t be an evil Chihuahua; be a lovely Golden Retriever.
