“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” — Cory Booker, United: Thoughts on Finding Common Ground and Advancing the Common Good

We have the power to choose. And we often have far more choices than what might be obvious.

We can choose to engage or disengage. To argue, criticize, and give up or to listen and empathize. It’s our choice what questions we ask and what tone we use.

We can choose to speak or to keep silent. To reach out or withdraw. We decide what and where we set boundaries.

In every situation and conversation, we have the power to choose. This power gives us ownership and responsibility. Very rarely is it accurate to say “I didn’t have a choice.”

The question then, is, are we willing to recognize our choices and own our decisions? (Hint: Giving away our power to choose is still a choice.)

We’re more powerful than we realize.
