The tenth session of the Empower Project revolved around a group discussion on RESPONSIBLE AI.

Artificial intelligence is an incredibly powerful technology with endless application. The CEO of a company has great power, but with power comes greater responsibilities, because a wrong decision can lead to severe downfall. Likewise, for Artificial Intelligence with great power comes with considerable responsibility, and hence the term RESPONSIBLE AI.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Artificial intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, unlike the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals, which involves consciousness and emotions. It is the endeavour to replicate or simulate human intelligence in machines.

Thinking humanly, Thinking rationally, Acting humanly, Acting rationally

The first two ideas concern thought processes and reasoning, while the others with behaviour.(Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach)

AI has advanced in its integration with daily human needs. Be it medical diagnosis, robot control. AI has been used to develop and advance numerous fields and industries, including finance(online trading and decision making ), healthcare, education(AI tutors), transportation, and more.

WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE AI?

Responsible AI focuses on ensuring the ethical, transparent and accountable use of AI technologies in a manner consistent with user expectations, organisational values and societal norms to build fairness, privacy, and security into these systems. It means establishing and implementing solutions that put people at the centre.

HOW RESPONSIBLE AI?

Some ways that may ensure ethical practice by AI may include: The need to develop models and algorithms that enable AI systems to reason about and take decisions based on responsibility, be transparent and justify their decisions accordingly.

  • Awareness among people of ethical consequences of AI and understand the limitations of AI.transparency and participation.

Some practices stated by google includes:

AI should:

1. Be socially beneficial.

2. Avoid creating or reinforcing unfair bias.

3. Be built and tested for safety.

4. Be accountable to people.

Applications we will not pursue:

1. Likely to cause overall harm.

2. Weapons or those that direct injury.

3. Surveillance violating internationally accepted norms.

4. Purpose contravenes international law and human rights.

WHY RESPONSIBLE AI?

Responsibility is fundamental to intelligence and AI research.

Whether it is fully automated or semi automated systems eg: self driving cars:responsible party if these cars get into accidents. the driver, pedestrian, the car company, or the government should be held responsible.

Can a car decide in face of a moral dilemma?. Can these accidents be termed as cyber crime? If yes then who should be held responsible. Thus, it falls on governments to regulate the driver who over-relies on autonomous features.

We also need to consider how we regulate the data they create and share

WHO?

There are many organisations concerned with AI ethics and policy, public and governmental as well as corporate and societal.Pondering over who should be governing and monitoring AI. There might not be a single large body but however with advancement in human understanding about AI we have seen some governments regulating the roles and use of AI.

The IEEE put together a Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems which has been creating and revising guidelines with the help of public input.

Google, IBM, and Microsoft , have integrated various programs and platforms to serve as a hub for artificial intelligence and advance the public’s understanding about Responsible AI.

There are a lot of questions and discoveries arising now. Checkout these articles on why scientist say that “It’ll Be Impossible to Control a Super-Intelligent AI”

Do share your views on why you feel Responsible AI is a necessity.
