Transgender, Cisgender… None of Us Are ‘Normal’!

Our society is slowly growing up. Our society is moving out of darkness and fear, out of rigid and cruel hierarchies, and into a framework that makes room for everyone. It’s a slow process. Many of those who are used to being in the middle, at the center, at the apex, resent the new crowded space.

Remember the bearded lady at the circus? Well, turns out that PCOS affects 7–10% of all cisgender women, and is the leading cause of infertility. It is also the most common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. Facial hair is one of the most common symptoms of PCOS.

Think about that — up to 10% of all women. And yet people would go to the circus and look upon a woman with facial hair as a ‘freak.’

It makes me wonder how many “normal” women would secretly agonize about their facial hair, and would return from such a visit to the circus with a deep sense of internal shame.
