During the coastal cleanup week we were fortunate to run pilots with several organizations and companies in Norway and Sweden. Local cleanups with global impact, were all efforts are doubled! How, you say?

Through four different cleanups in Oslo, Strømstad and Stockholm over 350 KGs of plastic waste were cleaned up thanks the volunteers attending the cleanups organised by Håll Sverige Rent, Framtiden i Våre Hender Oslo lokallag and Empower Clean City with collaborating companies.

Through Empower collaboration, the efforts of the cleanups are registered and approved, and the same amount of waste cleaned up are rewarded as tokens and donated to new cleanups through Empower globally. Every cleanup participant can use the app and register at empower.eco and see their impact and how their cleanup effort funds cleanup globally later!

This was the first blockchain driven pilots during the coastal cleanup week with global impact, and we are excited to extend and build new collaborations with cleanup volunteers and organisations — take a look at some insights from this years cleanups:

Oslo — Malmøya

Cleanup day at Malmøya with amazing volunteers from Framtiden i Våre Hender Oslo lokallag.

Framtiden i Våre hender and Empower collaborated on 4. May to pilot the first cleanup together at Malmøya, outside Oslo. The beach was polluted with lots of micro plastics. A time consuming and tedious task to clean up, but the volunteers picked an incredible amount of small pieces (like cotton swab plastics, pieces of styrofoam and other unidentifiable plastic objects). Over 8 KGs of this tiny small plastics in total — this equals for instance around 16 000 cotton swabs.

Sweden — Strømstad

Håll Sverige Rent organized a great cleanup at Syd Långö outside of Strömstand on 4. May, and Empower was fortunate to join on this sunny saturday.

Morten (Empower CFO) enjoys the cleanup nearby Strømstad, Sweden.

After a short boat trip the group quickly localised a lot of plastic waste and after just a few of hours over 130 KGs were measured up. Morten, Empower CFO, joined the HSR-cleanup and learned that even in small remote beaches, plastic waste has become a big issue.

Oslo — Empower Clean city

Empower Clean City teamed up with Team Rubicon on a big stand in Oslo city to spread awareness on the plastic waste problem during the coastal cleanup week. And at 2. May companies KLM/Air France and Døgnvill burger joined the “Rydd med jobben” / “Cleanup with your employer” conducting a great cleanup near Akerselva — with global impact.

Håll Sverige Rent — Coca Cola, Gålö — Sweden

Håll Sverige Rent conducted a series of cleanups all over Sweden, and we were fortunate to have Empower ambassador Therese Bennich to join their cleanup together in Gålö, outside of Stockholm. 130 volunteers from Coca Cola company attended the Håll Sverige Rent cleanup and we were amazed that approx 140 KGs of plastic waste were cleaned up, with global impact.

An impressive amount of waste collected with global impact, Håll Sverige Rent focused upfront on both knowledge and awareness on the cleanup event.
