How to be a sustainable meal producer these days? In many aspects our everyday food needs reinventing: we eat health-advertised food which has non-organic ingredients, factory farmed meat, industrial cooking oils and is wrapped in plastic. Empower´s partner SKIM wanted to make a real difference. They decided to start a whole new way of ordering meals, and not just any meals, but “regret free” food which is sustainably produced, increases the demand for organic farming and has zero plastic packaging.

SKIM´s packaging is 100 % plastic free

Based in the UK, SKIM believes that what we choose to eat has the potential to create a positive global impact. More interestingly, the meal packaging they use is 100 % plastic free, obtained from renewable sources and is fully compostable. That said, to have an even stronger impact beyond the food ingredients and packaging, SKIM decided to also support the global plastic waste clean ups with Empower to protect nature and prevent the plastic waste ending up in the oceans.

Sustainably produced food is in demand in the UK

“We have a rule in our kitchen: “Always leave a place better than you found it” and it is frustrating to know that I will leave a more polluted planet behind for the next generation”, says the SKIM co-founder Robert Tarczy. “It is important to understand that plastic will always come back to us, possibly in our food chain, just think about the fish that we eat and contain microplastic, or in our drinking water. When I started SKIM it was one of my priorities to decrease the single plastic use. As you may know, plastic packaging in the UK accounts for nearly 70 % of our plastic waste and a large chunk of it is food packaging. Plastic clean up is a cause that I strongly believe in and Empower is a great platform to make an impact as a food business”, he continues.

SKIM collects and recycles 1 kg of plastic with Empower with every purchase. But where will the impact occur? At the moment Empower works in over 20 countries having most active clean up organization partners in for example Nigeria, Tanzania and Egypt in Africa, and in India and Laos in Asia. Over 7000 people have been engaged so far in the plastic clean up activities, which makes an incredible amount of local social impact where it is needed the most.

“I think it is always a nice by-product to fund a positive cause with your purchase. I think the whole mentality around consumer goods is changing and people are more and more in favour of sustainable consumption”, Robert Tarczy sums up.
