Dear Reader,

To create, according to Oxford's definition, means to bring (something) into existence. By this definition, we are all creators.

I’m no starving artist—that would be too cool. Rather, I am an aspiring artist and writer striving to create something that fulfills me when I create it. In this arc of my life, I am learning to sustain creative persistence.

Here are some tips for developing creative persistence:

  • Set realistic goals.
  • Don’t try to do too much too soon. Start with small, achievable goals, and gradually work your way up to bigger ones.
  • Break down your goals into smaller steps.
  • This will make them seem less daunting and more manageable.

My goals were nebulous at best for the longest time, defined as “I want to be a famous writer” and “I want my writing to support my travels and be a wealth of passive income.” Great goals for sure! Yet, when I started working as a writer almost 5 years ago, I had no idea how difficult emotionally, mentally, and spiritually it would be to sustain these goals — especially without chunking them out into a feasible structure. I feel like the guy at Texas Roadhouse betting he can chow down the 5 lb steak! My eyes were bigger than my stomach; translated, my writing intentions were greater than how well I could actually write and create. But hey, any goal worth being hungry for should always keep you going.
