this heirloom quilt
of flesh
a crumpled
yellowed
fraying
masterpiece
2
time’s bullying
reminds me of a stormy day
in childhood
I’m carrying a much-loved
comic book
to school
clutching it fiercely
a gust of wind
tears it from my fingers
tosses it and rends it
the scraps fly
3
tender and guilty
we long to shelter our children
from the world
from knowledge
of the world
a savage place
where the sweetness of young animals
creates a microclimate
of hope
