Welcome to En Color, a progressive publication illuminating Black voices, Black art, and Black culture. Thank you for choosing to be a part of the En Color community and share your pieces — as it truly takes a village.

We are a collective created for us and by us; a library of thought-provoking stories from writers across the African Diaspora. Rooted in a passion for storytelling, art, and culture — we impact, influence, and inspire one story at a time.

How to Submit to En Color?

En Color accepts creative, thought-provoking non-fiction articles, poems, first- person essays, listicles, and features between 800 and 3,000 words. Feature stories are accepted up to 4,000 words.

To submit you need:

  1. A Medium Account.
  2. An Unpublished Draft. It should not have been published before or in any other Medium Publication.
  3. A fresh perspective.
  4. Content that isn’t plagiarised, period!
  5. A word limit that is a minimum 800 words.
  6. An article that impacts and/or inspires our readers.

Guidelines

  • We encourage you to submit one piece at a time; however, you may send up to three poems as one submission.
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome! However, please let us know if your work has been accepted by another publication immediately. We do not accept work that has been previously published on other platforms.
  • Sending a submission does not guarantee that your piece will be published. We will carefully read through to ensure that your submission meets our guidelines.
  • We do not accept pieces that are: sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or any other negative -isms not specified above. All Black lives matter over here.

Please note: En Color currently is unable to pay our writers upfront. But, in the meantime, we strongly advise writers to join the Medium Partner Program (MPP) and place their pieces behind the paywall so that you can get compensation for your work.

Formatting Standards

Before submitting your piece for publication, please review the following standards.

  1. The title should be in title-case and subtitles in sentence-case. Headings should also be in sentence-case and formatted using Medium’s inbuilt heading format tool.
  2. Feature images should always sit below the title and sub-title. Photos should be appropriately credited.
  3. Please ensure work is laid out and presented in a way that is visually attractive to readers.
  4. Avoid big chunks of text! Spacing is your friend!
  5. It is preferred that you use an editing software like Grammarly before submission.
  6. Tag your work with one of these headings: culture, food for thought, identity, mental health, poetry, politics, relationships, or spirituality.

Response Time

Our Editor has a demanding full-time job and various side-projects. We know waiting is excruciating, but we ask for grace and understanding. We will try our best to respond within one week of submission.
