Protecting threatened and endangered species requires innovative land solutions and cooperative economic funding. Land conservation trusts are part of this answer., along with purchases of new land parcels. Together these puzzle pieces form a picture which encompasses the best answer.

Greenways connect natural, agricultural, forest, and ranch lands and preserve wildlife habitat for Florida’s black bears and panthers. The map below shows areas in Florida where black bears roam during the year. Purchase and management of this land benefit future generations of Florida ensuring wildlife survival and watershed protection. One group involved in the fight to protect the land and animals of Florida is the Conservation Trust for Florida. National groups involved in this effort include WWF and the NRDC. Protecting animal rights and habitat in any state strengthens worldwide results for endangered animal protection. Wars and budget concerns impact near term local animal protection, but worldwide protection delivers the lasting results.

The Sierra Club and the Humane Society tried to halt the Florida black bear hunt without success. It is clear that more conservationists must protect Florida’s endangered animals for enduring animal policy. It will not be perfect. Florida has a large hunting and fishing culture outdoors crowd. This must not stop the protection of threatened or endangered animals. Animal and environmental protection groups must endorse large-scale habitat preservation and associated land purchases.

There are several separate animal habitat areas where the Florida black bears roam. Land must be acquired to connect their habitats and build a safe zone. The land can support relocated endangered or threatened animals and reptiles. Foundations or wealthy individuals can work together or separately to purchase this land.

Resources must be allocated to fund habitat acquisition. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission can co-manage this area to stabilize animal and habitat issues and reverse long-term trends. The management of this habitat can be financially supported with significantly increased hunting permit fees for those species where hunting is allowed.

Previous environmental protection for animals rested with environmental impact studies and budget allocations at both state and federal levels. The American landscape is changing and federal budgets no longer support grants for the protection of endangered animals in our individual states. Each state must design its own lasting solution of land and endow money to protect these animals.

In a world of increasing conflict and budget deficits, citizens must look ahead at the likely outcomes to create an environmental safety zone. Does the federal government have the funds to help manage type problem? In a growing economy with young workers, there is a large budget funding many interests. Aging retired populations with increasing Medicare and Medicaid expenses and inverted social security budgets leave no money for this type of expense.

The cost of 2015 Florida black bear hunting permits is $100 for residents and $300 for non-residents. Annual alligator hunts must also increase in cost. These hunting fees are artificially low. The fee structure for a resident alligator trapping license and alligator harvest tags is $272 and increased to $1,022 for non-resident hunters. Two additional alligator tags cost $62. This is very low and can easily be tripled in cost. These fees should be increased by 500%.

Alligator and Florida black bear hunting are the spotlighted exotic animal hunting. Some hunters may not want the skins. Part of hunting is the bonding experience and time spent together during this sport. This is not degraded through increased hunting fees or the sale of animal skins to the luxury fashion industry. This is a unique step to pay for upgraded wildlife management. This is not ideal but acknowledges that a hunting culture exists in the state and animal protection must be increased.
