I have picked 5 non-mainstream spiritual books that gave me the most precious insights into myself, this world, and beyond: the origin of the soul, its journey through incarnations, trauma, self-knowledge, healing, and spiritual growth.

I have read a ton of books on spirituality, personal development, psychology, and the like. Looking at my bookshelves, I can’t recall what certain books are about at all. However, there are a few of them that have been truly eye-opening and influential. So here is the list.

1. The Indigo Journals by Yol Swan

This more-than-400-pages autobiographical book can be a real breakthrough for Starseed souls, or indigos, as the author calls them. The first half of the book is an autobiography in which the author shares her spiritual and healing journey, which is quite interesting. The second half of the book explains the masculine-feminine energy divide and the demise of the feminine, offers some insights of a cosmological kind on the origins of the soul and the Earth, explains the roots of the ancient traumas we all carry, and provides practices and exercises for healing. For me, it has been the most comprehensive and deepest inquiry into the Starseed souls I have found so far. It is thanks to this book I could fully recognize and acknowledge my “indigo” nature, understand at least a little bit of the history of my soul, embrace its magnitude, and find all of my traumas described. Because the subject is so vast and so complicated, I cannot say I have achieved healing success with this book, but at the same time I did, because in order to heal something, you first need to know and understand it.

2. The Old Soul’s Guidebook by Ainslie Macleod

This book is written by a psychic specializing in healing past lives. It offers many insights directly channelled from his spirit guides, explaining that souls vary in their age from level 1 to 10 and that discovering and healing past lives can bring healing and liberation in your current incarnation. The book is filled with real and fascinating stories of his clients, demonstrating just how much our current life can be influenced by experiences of what we lived in other incarnations. Overall, the book is a brilliant introduction to the soul and its meaningful and purposeful journey.

3. How Old is Your Soul? By Alyssa Malehorn

This book goes even deeper into the question of the age of the soul, providing insights into particular lessons, gifts, and archetypes of every soul age. You will certainly recognize to which soul age you belong and will see your current challenges with more clarity. There are guided exercises and meditations provided for each soul age, addressing its most burning needs.

4. The INFJ Revolution by Lauren Sapala

This is not a spiritual book per se, however, it has been pivotal in my self-knowledge and self-realization. Based on the Myers-Briggs theory, the book is focused on INFJ and INFP personalities. Written in a simple and unpretentious manner, it explains the core features of these very complex and seemingly contradicting characters that do not understand and accept themselves. The author is sending a very encouraging message to embrace our difference, “weirdness”, fire and passion. “Not “fitting in” is exactly what we are here to do,” she says. She calls us to use our unique intuitive gift, “to bring light out of the darkness”, and heal the world.

5. The Sacred Prostitute by Nancy Qualls-Corbett

This is a very sophisticated read. I admit I sometimes struggled to understand the depth of it, yet I can only recommend it. Through the lens of Jungian psychology, the author explores the history of the divine feminine and its destiny through civilizations and cultures. She talks a lot about the patriarchal system and how it affects both women and men today. Personally, this book gave me a new perspective on just how wrong history turned two thousand years ago when the rule of the masculine began. How sexuality became dirty and unethical along the way, as opposed to the time when it was one with spirituality.
