Energy has progressed significantly throughout history and has led to monumental changes. However, in todays world, there is a new emphasis on the need for energy sources to be more sustainable as well as cost effective. The sustainable development goal that I will be researching in this publication is achieving affordable and clean energy. The objective of this goal is to make energy more sustainable and widely available especially in poorer countries. Though energy efficiency continues to improve and electricity in poorer regions has accelerated, there is still a need for clean and affordable energy in order to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal Targets.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in a number of ways, from the economy to healthcare as well as many aspects of daily life. In this blog, I will be explaining how the pandemic and attaining affordable energy are connected and why progressing towards this sustainable development goal will help the world progress towards global recovery. By understanding how the pandemic has affected nations around the world, it will emphasize the need for cleaner and more affordable energy sources and their important role in helping fight COVID-19.

The reason why I am researching this topic and why I find it interesting is because it has affected me directly just as it has affected the lives of many others. In the next couple of years, I hope to see an end to this pandemic and a return to “normal life”, however it cannot be done without making some changes.

I believe that people from all over the world will be able to benefit from my findings because these people could also be facing a similar situation in terms of fighting the pandemic. By finding solutions to the energy problem and working towards the sustainable development goal, we will be one step closer towards recovery both economically and health-wise.

From my own knowledge, I realize how important finding affordable and clean energy sources is when it comes to battling virus’/diseases. Having power is essential for healthcare facilities in order for life saving equipment to function, supplying clean water for hygiene, and enabling communications to connect people while maintaining social distancing. Without these essential services, hospitals in poorer areas will not be able to take care of patients and less people will be able to be treated.

Some important questions that will eventually be answered in this publication are:

  • What will happen in the future if people do not follow COVID-19 guidelines and maintain social distancing?
  • How does having affordable energy affect our ability to combat virus or disease outbreaks?
  • What does the timeframe look like for global recovery with and without the progress in energy?

These questions can all be seen as “what if” scenarios with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic. The answer to these questions will reveal why attaining the goal of clean and affordable energy is so important when it comes to recovering from the pandemic.
