Every job offers some exciting opportunities and challenges that help you push your limits, move beyond your comfort zone and walk that extra mile to succeed, every single day. This is exactly what makes a job role interesting and this is why it becomes a part of you. In the oil and gas industry, one such job role is that of a Drilling Engineer.

From Africa to Europe to the Middle East, your work as a Drilling Engineer will take you around the world. Most often, you will be working offshore or in remote places. However, the job offers some office-based positions too.

You might feel overwhelmed with the highly demanding work on offshore rigs — both mentally and physically. Sometimes the weather can be harsh and on other times, the work conditions. Living conditions on the rig can also get uncomfortable.

“Rooms on the rig are compact, usually accommodating 50 to 100 people, and are frequently shared with a colleague working the opposite 12-hour shift. There will be meals and laundry services and also some regular facilities like a gym and snooker room, where you will have access to computers and DVDs. Alcohol is prohibited on the rig.”

Another important aspect of your job is flexibility since you would be traveling to different rigs. Traveling by helicopter is normal and sometimes at a very short notice. Travel to sites in other parts of the world can be complex and difficult. You should be ready for adjusting to a new environment every now and then.

But you got to look at the brighter side.

As a Drilling Engineer, you would be the one to work out the best way to drill the well to ensure the process is safe and cost-effective. You would decide what equipment and resources will be needed. You will be at the forefront and you will lead. Most importantly, you will be making a huge impact!

What you take charge of as a Drilling Engineer?

As a Drilling Engineer, you will be responsible for the project from the beginning to the end. This involves analyzing the cost of the required equipment, the manpower needed for the task, and the project’s running cost. Also, making sure that all the safety standards and compliances.

This is one thing that drilling engineers often enjoy the most about their job role. The simple reason being that you are aware of the fact that even the smallest actions can make a huge impact. And certainly, you would feel all the more accountable. Particularly on the rig, if one thing goes wrong, the situation can get very dangerous.

You got to think on your feet. Something goes wrong, you need to immediately take charge to fix the problem quickly, to ensure minimum damage.
