I Receive More Communication from My Online Teachers Than When Attending School In-Person

As a high school student attending classes virtually, I have experienced first-hand the importance of strong communication with teachers. My homeroom teacher diligently checks in with me, ensuring that not a week goes by without harmonious communication. Our discussions span from coursework to emotional wellness, and I believe this level of connection should be standard in all educational settings. However, for students attending school in-person, establishing such relationships can be challenging.

The Current Challenge in In-Person Education

Many in-person students struggle to reach out for help with their lessons, a situation that should not be normalized. It’s concerning when online students, like myself, experience better communication development compared to our in-person counterparts. Schools must strive to foster more complex relationships between teachers and students, creating a safe and engaging classroom environment.

Impact on Academic and Social Development

Improving student-teacher relationships can significantly benefit academics and social development. Excelling in coursework is intertwined with having and maintaining a social relationship with teachers. The absence of this support can lead to higher dropout rates, and even impact A-G Completion rates, negatively impacting the community at large. Unfinished and a lack of educational support can even contribute to increased crime rates.

Strategies for Improvement

  • Encourage Open Communication: Teachers should promote an environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment. This openness paves the way for students to seek help and develop trust.
  • Understand Individual Imperatives: Recognizing and respecting students’ diverse backgrounds and needs is crucial. Teachers can adapt their teaching styles to cater to various learning preferences, enhancing student comprehension.
  • Incorporate Collaborative Activities: Activities that celebrate and integrate diverse ethnic backgrounds can foster a sense of safety and recognition among students, preventing feelings of humiliation or exclusion.
  • Implement Feedback Mechanisms: Regular feedback from students can provide insights into their comfort levels and learning needs. This feedback is essential for continually improving the educational experience.

Conclusion

By developing more meaningful interactions between students and teachers, we can contribute to a more supportive and effective educational system. This approach not only enhances academic performance but also supports mental health, creating a more inclusive and nurturing learning environment for all.
