Students Thrive When Parents Set High Behavioral Standards and Take Responsibility for Their Child’s Actions in The Classroom

Schools and instructors are currently dealing with a concerning issue: student misbehavior. Student misbehavior has resulted in teachers quitting and, in the worst-case scenario, students being expelled, which is why parents should become more active and closely monitor their child’s behavior in school. Parent involvement is essential for student success. The authors of, “Parent Academic Involvement as Related to School Behavior, Achievement, and Aspirations: Demographic Variations Across Adolescence” ,

highlight the significance of parental involvement in their students’ behavioral lives. The study claims that parental academic involvement was associated with fewer behavioral problems and led to greater accomplishment and aspirations. There are various ways in which students misbehave. While teachers and parents are needed to determine the root cause of the misbehavior, nothing compares to parents taking action themselves; and parents must bear responsibility.

Agentic solutions and tactics parents can use to hold their children accountable for their actions:

1. Communicate with their child’s teacher at least once a month
2. Set behavioral standards for their child.
3. Teach their child personal responsibility.
4. Encourage their child to express their emotions effectively. Emotional intelligence is vital.

Agentic solutions teachers can use to assist parents in being accountable for their child’s behavior:

1. Communicate with the parents of your students.
2. Meet with parents to devise strategies for improving student behavior.

Several advantages are present when parents are aware and take ownership of their child’s behavior at school. For starters, it strengthens their connection with the teacher, which is essential for successful communication. When teachers and parents communicate effectively, they can develop strategies to make sure students are on the pathway to success both academically and behaviorally. It also assists students in becoming more conscious of their actions in class, because they know their parents and teachers are aligned to hold them accountable. If they know their parents are highly involved in their behavior at school, they’ll have no choice but to behave. With enough practice, students will build the skills and habits required to meet high behavioral expectations, and their motivation will become intrinsic. An additional benefit of parental involvement is that it may prevent teachers from quitting their jobs. When parents are involved, students behave well, and teachers’ jobs are more manageable. It is no secret that children may object to their parents being overly involved in their behavior. Recognizing that doing so will help them build stronger relationships with their teachers is crucial. If kids know that their parents are in constant contact with their teachers, they are more likely to behave well, resulting in better school performance. In sum, parents should take responsibility for their child’s actions and set behavioral standards!
