There isn’t any Cure for “Rising Demand for Energy”, but “Smart Metering” can be the Prevention.

He believes in, “prevention is better than cure”. His vision for the future of energy , technological advancements in smart metering, smart grid technology and other environmental concerns, are very pristine. He started to contribute in the development of Indian economy by incorporating state of the art technology for manufacturing & designing the energy management solutions & products before the “project Make in India” even thought of. His Technical words are hidden with a message ,”Addressing the right problem is , solution half done” !
Hear out for Mr. Sam P. Cherian, The Co-Founder & Chairman of Elmeasure India Pvt. Ltd.
This post brings you his views & thoughts shared recently with Electrical & power info magazine in an interview. Comment below this article, about your understanding/ queries/ views on the “Rising demand for energy in India”.
1. What are the potential opportunities in smart metering in India over the next decade?
India has always been a power deficit country, and has consistently suffered grid failures and power blackouts. This has created a need to modernize the power infrastructure in the country. According to industry estimates, nearly 30 percent of the power generated in India is wasted in transmission and distribution, primarily because of leakages and theft. India’s energy demand is rising very fast and in order to meet this rising demand, there needs to be sufficient reliable power infrastructure in place. Unfortunately, the high rate of electricity theft creates a situation where the utilities are not financially sustainable. The utilities fail to collect revenue and as a result, they do not have the necessary funding to invest in their grids. The government has made a strong push for the deployment of smart meters and smart grid technologies in the country. This opens up plethora of opportunities for smart metering in India over the next decade.
2. What are the growth drivers of smart metering market in India?
The shortage of power coupled with a boom in the real estate sector and the Governments Smart Cities projects are the major drivers for smart metering market in India.
3. What are some of the major trends in the smart metering adoption worldwide?
Worldwide most countries share common challenges when it comes to energy. Demand is rising while security and environmental concerns are changing the way energy is generated and distributed. As a result, utilities around the world are seeking more efficient, reliable, and secure ways to manage energy generation, transmission and distribution. The “smart grid” has emerged as an effective approach to aligning the supply of energy in a given market with demand, while reducing waste. Utilities adopt smart grid technology so they can attain several goals, to better manage peak energy load, to better incorporate the intermittent power supply from renewable
energy sources and to permit greater consumer control over household energy usage. In many developing countries curtailing energy theft is another strong motivator for adopting smart metering technology.
4. What are the main global markets for smart metering? Where does India stand in terms of smart meter adoption?
Latin America, Africa, and Asia are the main markets for Smart Metering System. The idea of Smart grid and Smart Metering is still evolving in India. The governments push for smart grid & Smart Metering is a welcome sign but still a lot needs to be done for its adoption to take off in a big way.
5. Give three suggestions to policy makers/government in India, which you think will transform the Industry In the next couple of years.
For the Industry to transform in the next couple of years the policy makers needs to,
- Create a platform for public and private stakeholder members, research institutions and power utilities to exchange ideas and information on smart grids and develop policy to implement the same.
- Bring together experts from regulation, policy, and the corporate sector to build support for smart grid policies.
- Find ways to improve the financial health of utilities to help them to invest in Smart Grids & Smart Metering technologies.
6. What Is your vision for the future?
We have acquired 3 acres of land at the Hardware Park launched at Devanahalli near the Bangalore International Airport. Our plans are to come up with the Stare of the Art Manufacturing facility measuring close to 2,00,000 Sq. ft. The first phase of construction will be dose to about 35,000 sq.ft. manufacturing plant and is expected to be completed in the next 3 months. A growth strategy has been plotted for ElMeasure for the next five years. Vertical integration, acquisitions, product development, and new horizons in product offerings are part of the plan being designed for the future.
