Energy Web Chain Celebrates Tripling of Validator Network
Zug, Switzerland — 2 September 2020 — Today Energy Web announced that the number of validator nodes maintaining the Energy Web Chain network has tripled from launch. The EW Chain is the world’s first enterprise-grade, public, open-source blockchain platform tailored to the energy sector’s regulatory, operational, and market needs. It is also the only such blockchain in any sector where well-known companies run the network’s validator nodes.
The EW Chain launched in June 2019 with 10 validators. This week marks the addition of the 30th validator to the network, which now spans 18 time zones across the world. New validators include Acciona, Austrian Power Grid (APG), EDF, Fluvius, PTT, Stedin, Tenaska, TEPCO, Vestas, and Vodafone. 50 or more validators are expected to support the ongoing decentralization of the network by the chain’s second anniversary next summer.
“The EW Chain is truly one of a kind —30 major companies around the world working together to operate and govern a public blockchain network,” explained Micha Roon, CTO of Energy Web. “It is a testament to the Energy Web ecosystem, and especially our members. They have come together in a shared commitment to innovate in an open-source environment, to accelerate the digitalization of the energy sector, and to harness the potential of decentralized technologies to navigate the energy transition toward a customer-centric, low-carbon future.”
Throughout the remainder of 2020, the Energy Web community is launching several initiatives, including a new EW Chain test network, bridges to additional non-energy blockchain communities, a toolkit focused on electric vehicle (EV) charging, and additional investments from the Energy Web Community Fund into the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS) stack.
About Energy Web
Energy Web is a global, member-driven nonprofit accelerating a low-carbon, customer-centric electricity system by unleashing the potential of blockchain and decentralized technologies. EW focuses on our open-source, decentralized, digital technology stack — the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS) — to enable any device, owned by any customer, to participate in any energy market.
In mid-2019, EW launched the Energy Web Chain, the world’s first enterprise-grade, public, open-source blockchain platform tailored to the sector’s regulatory, operational, and market needs. The EW Chain anchors a broader technology stack known as the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS), a blockchain-plus suite of middleware, toolkits, and other digital solutions to support the energy transition.
EW also fostered the world’s largest energy blockchain ecosystem, comprising utilities, grid operators, renewable energy developers, corporate energy buyers, IoT / telecom leaders, and others. More than two-dozen of those companies host validator nodes for the EW Chain. Energy Web has become the industry’s leading energy blockchain partner and most-respected voice of authority on energy blockchain.
