Hitachi Joins Energy Web
Strategic collaboration with Hitachi ABB Power Grids will advance carbon-neutral societies
Zurich and Zug, Switzerland — 9 March 2021 — Today Hitachi, one of the world’s largest solution providers to the energy and utilities sector, became the newest member of Energy Web (EW). The strategic collaboration between the two organizations will advance future carbon-neutral societies by leveraging open-source, decentralized, digital technologies.
With Hitachi’s joining, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will collaborate with Energy Web. Hitachi ABB Power Grids is a joint venture formed in 2020 between two Fortune Global 500 companies: Japanese multinational conglomerate Hitachi and Swedish-Swiss multinational corporation ABB.
With a combined 250 years of heritage, the new joint venture serves utility, industry, and infrastructure customers across their respective value chains, including solutions focused on sustainable energy, green transportation, decarbonization, smart cities, and digital transformation.
“The key to a successful transition from fossil-fueled, combustion-derived energy to clean renewable energy can only be achieved by working within a collaborative consortium of visionary companies, such as the Energy Web ecosystem,” explained Stuart Young, Energy Transition Champion, Hitachi ABB Power Grids. “The greatest development to humankind in modern times is the Internet of Value (IoV). Only by harnessing the capabilities of blockchain technologies and the open-source EW-DOS tech stack, can we effectively and efficiently develop our digital solutions and address the global objectives of reducing emissions, optimizing infrastructure and industry, and delivering on our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Hitachi’s core values are built on our commitment to delivering economically viable innovation and reducing social inequality, by providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable, carbon-free energy to all.”
It has already been a busy year for Hitachi ABB Power Grids. Just last month the company announced several major projects, including grid integration of the power from Qatar’s first utility-scale solar farm, providing the energy storage solution for Singapore’s first virtual power plant, and transmission interconnection of the world’s largest offshore wind farm (in the North Sea off the coast of the UK).
“We are proud to welcome Hitachi and Hitachi ABB Power Grids into the Energy Web ecosystem as our newest member. Our two organizations are a natural fit, closely aligned around the goal of accelerating the low-carbon energy transition,” said Walter Kok, CEO of Energy Web. “With an Energy Web ecosystem that already includes many of the world’s largest and most-innovative grid operators and energy companies, Hitachi is an important addition representing a critical segment of the value chain.”
Hitachi and Hitachi ABB Power Grids will expect to have a joint project with Energy Web in the near future.
