Finding the Flat Earth Community

In ancient cultures, it was extremely common for someone to believe in the Flat Earth Theory. However, as technology advanced and geographics and science became more modernized, several people realized the scientific mistake that was the flat Earth belief and believed in the accepted present-day belief: The Earth is round. Although research about the shape of the Earth advanced and scientific culture shifted, some people still believed that the Earth was flat. Since most of the global population believes that the Earth is round (due to scientific research and advanced technology that proves the Earth is, in fact, round), the people who carry the old belief of the flat Earth tend to be outsiders. Due to their continued theory of the flat Earth, these flat earthers tend to come together to share and talk about their theory where they are accepted.

Flat Earthers Online

The Flat Earth Theory is still carried on by some people, who have formed communities around their shared belief that the Earth is not round. Flat earthers can be found on nearly every social media website, including Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit, these flat Earth communities can primarily be found on Facebook. A Facebook group called “The Flat Earth Society” is linked to www.theflatearthsociety.org is a community with 229,414 followers. It is easy to access and provides information as to why they think their belief is correct. This group is highly active. Several members regularly post within it and there are new pictures/videos and comments nearly every day. I think that this Facebook group posts so often because this online community may be the only place where they feel accepted and where they can confidently share and comment their ideas and theories without the judgement of the majority (people who believe the Earth is round).

Do Flat Earthers Meet in Person?

After some mild research on the Flat Earth Society, I see where this Facebook group was involved in a ‘Flat Earth Festival’ in the Summer of 2016. This event was followed by 722 people who were connected to the Flat Earth Society in one way or another. This festival shows just how serious flat earthers take their theory. This event appeared to be set up very professionally as it had its own email and phone number, a booked venue, booking acts, and expensive tickets.

I’m sure that flat earthers may meet in small groups within their own cities, but you can find the majority of them online.
