The meme dictionary: Defining a YouTubers Reddit

In all communities, you will have shared ideas, languages, and more to define what type of group you are involved in. These things bring people together, so the question is, how do you define the dictionary of a meme community on Reddit?

The Language: From A-Z

So, How does the /r/PewdiepieSubmissions community communicate with each other? There are many answers to this question, but the number one form of communication is MEMES. They share memes specific to Pewdipie references and videos. This is how they interact with each member and Felix himself. However, when they talk directly to each other in comments, it is less specific Pewdiepie vocabulary and more regular conversation and internet jokes. Here are some examples of the meme economy currently on Reddit.

MEME REVIEW MEME REVIEW!

This is a meme template referencing a Minecraft video.

Memes are what this community thrives on. Pewdiepie reacts to them frequently from “meme review” or “LWAIY.” These videos bring interaction and give fans things to discuss.

Disclaimer: Meme Review is a video Pewdiepie uses to review current memes that don’t have to be on the Reddit. LWIAY is when he reviews his actual Reddit. It started with suggestions on what his fans should make and then spiraled into the community it is today.

Enough with the memes, You probably want to hear some examples of the language. The way people speak in this community changes as time passes. Just like in any other place or scenario. Some words highlight, and some fade in the past. Let me list a few and explain what they mean….

  1. Big PP: This is what Pewdiepie uses as a rating system on the subreddit. If he likes your post, you will get a big pp. Versus if he doesn’t, you will get the opposite, a small pp.
  2. Big Brain/Small Brain: This is the same concept as the Big/Small pp listed above. Fans want to have a “big brain,” and Pewdiepie will use this word even when he does/says dumb things.
  3. 19-year-olds: This is what Pewdiepie calls his fans. Years ago, he used to call them 9-year olds, but now he says they have “grown-up.” Redditors will call themselves fellow 19-year-olds for this reason.
  4. Minecraft Veteran: A common term used to say that you play A LOT of Minecraft. This is supposed to show you know a lot about the game.

These are some of the most important terms used currently, but there are so many more. (Is math related to silence?- key for pewdiepie to know who his fans are.) (“Marzia check your WhatsApp?”- something he asks his wife frequently in videos, which later became a meme.) These words are vital in showing if you are a fan and a part of the community.

The way messages are typed shows how the community effectively communicates. One Reddit user had a conversation with another, showing excitement and interest in the subject. To explain, a meme was posted about Pewdiepies' latest Minecraft video. It was something he didn't know how to make. The one user commented that “Pewdiepie didn’t need this post because he chose the “big brain” path and just mined a bunch of it instead”. Many users upvoted this, and one responded with “work harder, not smarter”. Another added, pretending to talk in Pewdiepies voice, “I’m A MInEcraFT VeteRAN.” This exchange shows the invested appreciation they have for Pewdiepie and can be analyzed even further. The use of the Bolded and unbolded letters on the internet gives readers a sense that the commenter uses a mockery-type tone. There is a book that explains internet slang like this perfectly. “ All Caps will indicate Strong feelings” (Because Internet CH4 pg 115). The Reddit user shows strong emotion to the way Pewdiepie displayed his “genius” in the game.

Does the community allow members? Or does their secret language make them too exclusive?

The /r/Pewdiepie submissions community is very open to new followers, and I have seen many that will gladly explain memes and such to others. (I mean, I am explaining this stuff to you now, aren’t I?) Their language may be hard to understand, so it is EASY to get confused on the site, but it is nothing an explanation and slight teasing can’t fix. (This means you may get called a small brain, sorry) This community is not advertised to everyone, but Pewdiepie and meme lovers are definitely the main targets.
