What is r/OverwatchUniversity

What brings a community of over 100,000 people together under one name? What is the key thing that all members share in common to gather in such a large crowd? For r/OverwatchUniversity the answer is the interest and pursuit of improvement in their craft, well in this case gaming. While members come from many parts of the world with various levels of skill and knowledge when it comes to Overwatch, all play to win. That’s why they all come to share and discuss regularly how to refine their skills.

You know that satisfying feeling when you learn something new for the first time. The exciting rush of pulling off a skateboard trick for the first time or even just flipping a water bottle perfectly onto a table. That feeling is one of the main attractions to joining the r/OverwatchUniversity. Mainly because we can learn infinite combinations of strategies to win more games. When you are a part of this group I can guarantee your bag of tricks will grow the more you dive in.

For example, one member of the community posted an eye-opening guide on how to pick up on visual and audio cues while playing to improve reaction speed. Breaking down everything in the game from character voice lines to visuals like McCree's flashbang. However, what stood out to me was how in the comments the one who made the guide was informed of something new. Saying “Anyway, firing weapons also have distinctive sounds for each weapon and hero, so if you hear shots, you can recognize the hero and where he/she/it is.” While this was a great example of the type of discussion in the community, there are plenty of other informative topics of discussion.

Another great example is how certain established Overwatch Coaches promote their business through the site. One interesting coach I’ve noticed gained some popularity in the community is u/The_Realth who offers to review video/clips of gameplay people submit to his discord. Also since he is one of the higher ranking players of Overwatch he can give detailed and positive feedback on how to get better at the game.

However, one thing that may be a problem for some is finding tips exclusive to PC or Console users. Meaning that if you were a console player then you would have no use for PC-focused advice. Especially since many agree how you play the game is radically different at times depending if you are on console or PC. An example of this being when a console user on Reddit asked for console-specific settings for each character in the game. While this discussion will help other console users, when it comes to PC players they are kinda just left out. Granted some feel that topics like this can be universal. One person commented on the discussion mentioned that “Having different aim sensitivity for every hero sounds actually insane to me.”. So while there are small subgroups between console and PC I can say with confidence that the majority of the discussions are informative and creative.
