Why is the Among Us community doing well?

After researching where this community likes to meet online, what they share with each other, and the special keywords they use to communicate with each other, the only thing left to ask is: Why does this community actively choose to interact in the Reddit forum daily? Why does r/AmongUs have a large, consistent, active community? There are many varied factors that contribute to why people keep coming back to this community repeatedly!

Why is this community alive and functioning on r/AmongUs?

One reason this community is regularly active and functioning is because of how large the community is overall. With 716k members in the community there definitely must be members who have something to share or respond to in the large r/AmongUs forum. I also think another reason this community is so popular and active is the organization that is used within Reddit. If you wanted to look at posts about bugs/glitches or humor or fan content, you can find that by clicking on a post that is labeled as “Humor,” for example, and you can find posts that members have posted under that label. This is super helpful if you are looking for something specific within what the community is sharing with each other. Among Us coming out with a recent update with a new map called the Airship and other updates have also contributed to giving this community a reason to play and come back to r/AmongUs.

What are members getting from their participation in this community?

What are individual members of this community getting from their active participation? There are a lot of things shared within the community that these members can benefit from. Let’s say that you were a new player in Among Us or even a more seasonal player, but you are curious on learning new imposter strategies or how to do your task faster, like shortcuts. Members who are sharing these strategies can be helping those people who want to learn and become better at the game even. People who participate in this forum are always getting positive feedback on their strategies or what they could improve, from looking at new different memes they have not seen before, to even joining the discord channel they have on the platform. By actively taking part in this channel members can receive feedback on strategies, funny memes or videos, answers to questions about updates or weird bugs/glitches on the game, how to do tasks on the new map, and even complain about the game or uplift fan art/content about the game! These members are getting in conversations where they can learn or contribute something new every time they take part, and others read and benefit from it. It is setting up a form of reliable resources and fresh information that this large, active community is constantly looking for or is eager to share with others. For example, a community member posted an account glitch they came across while trying to play the game after a new update but was not able to figure out what the problem was after trying to fix it. Two other community members shared that they also have experienced the same glitch after the new update, and they are also clueless as to why that happened. In this exchange, you can see that members in this community also experience similar problems and there is some underlying comfort in knowing that you are not alone in the struggles. The last person to comment under the thread sent a link and told the Reddit user that they are aware of the issues of the game and were working on getting it fixed and it was signed with “From Official Discord.” It is hard to determine whether or not this person is an actual developer from the game or if it is someone who is pretending to have that position. Either way, members of this community usually have some sort of discourse among themselves to discuss whatever it is they want to discuss.

How is the community benefitting from individual members’ commitment?

Individual members' commitment to the community is helping it draw more people and content to the forum. By posting a variety of content daily on the platform, the community keeps the momentum going and it encourages members in the community to participate somehow. Whether it is by posting content, upvoting and commenting under posts, or joining the discord attached to the forum, there are ways for people to establish relationships and have their voices to be heard. The community the relationship of people posting and commenting under their posts to keep it going so that when new people are looking to join the Among Us community, there is a community that is exhibiting an intention or purpose to find and maintain connections. “…Social media foster the kinds of repeated, unplanned interactions that sociologists have identified as crucial for the formation of deeper relationships” (pg 227) says McCulloch from Because Internet, which helps my point. This large community on Reddit helps people find connections that can lead to deeper relationships if both parties choose to do so, which if you’re looking to join a community it is probably because you want to connect with people who share a common interest with you and build conversations about that shared interest. During a time that we are in right now with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Among Us community was a great way for people to find new connections or maintain those relationships in a fun, unexpected way. And community members are keeping the game alive as well, by showing interest and love for the game. On https://gadgets.ndtv.com, I came across an article about Among Us called: “How Among Us Found Success in Connecting People During a Pandemic”. Something they wrote about players and relationships helps sum up the game and how the Among Us communities came about.
