Losing My Mom Didn’t Stop Our Connection

My mom left me the gift of imagination and still connects with me through it

When I graduated from college, my Mom bought me a mug with Albert Einstein’s famous saying “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination circles the world.”

As a writing major, after many hard years of finally finishing college while raising my children, this mug meant so much to me. It had been years of juggling my kids’ homework, school events, colds, ear infections, parties, holidays, you name it.

The last year of writing my thesis was overwhelming, and because I tend to do things the hard way, I was pregnant with my son. Mom and Dad would come and scoop up my two girls and take them for the weekend so I could write and research. It is now a wonderful memory.

At every point in my life, Mom has been there to help me when I needed it the most.

The mug represented her approach to me: it focused on what I was truly invested in and what lit me up. Mom never told me I should be practical and pick a steady job or do anything just for the money.
