The Invisible Woman Who’s Here to Influence the World
Who is she?
When I go out, I observe people attempting to be nice and not look, but their curiosity is tough to control.
When we think of someone in a wheelchair, the last term that comes to mind is “invisible.” Also, if you put a ventilator in the rear of the wheelchair, she’s anything but discreet!
When curiosity takes over, they move closer. I notice the gleam in their eyes. Some resist and simply grin, while others must comprehend.
They occasionally inquire whether we require assistance, believing that this will make the curiosity process easier. I never go out alone since I require help with everything. So, when we notice someone approaching, we exchange looks without judgment, merely curious to see if they would take a different route.
People drop themselves on my wheels and say to the person next to me, “I find these people so courageous!” To which my friend responds, “You can tell her.” And the stranger asks, “Does she understand?” Does she talk?” To which my friend responded, “Yes, she understands everything.”
This same narrative continues to play out in my own life. I know some people in my situation who give a long, furious speech about being there and not being deaf. Others fabricate a large, ridiculous…
